Gerunds after Verbs and Prepositions

In English, there are many expressions which are comprised of a verb followed by a preposition which are then followed by a gerund.

Unfortunately there is no specific rule for these examples.

These examples when they appear should be learnt and memorised.


Examples:

"I´m thinking of going on holiday next week."

"They´re talking about setting up a company."

"I´m looking forward to hearing from you."


TOP TIP!

When you are studying this kind of structure, it is

important that you don´t overload your brain with too much

information.

Concentrate on the main examples and then once you have

those memorised, go from there.


Examples:

"I agree with buying a new car."

"I believe in helping disadvantaged people."

"I worry about starting new jobs."

Comparative Adjectives In English


Comparatives of one-syllable adjectives

In order to make the comparative form of a one-syllable

adjective, we simply add "-er" to the end of the adjective.

For example:

Tall = Taller
Small = Smaller


One-syllable adjectives and their comparative form:

Short = Shorter than
Big = Bigger than
Old = Older than
Young = Younger than
Rich = Richer than
Poor = Poorer than


Two or more syllable adjectives and their comparatives.

When adjectives have 2 or more syllables in English, the gerenal rules for making the comparative form is to change the "y" to and "I" and add "-er".

Examples:

Pretty = Prettier than
Funny = Funnier than
Silly = Sillier than
Dirty = Dirtier than

When we want to create the comparative form of adjectives that have two or more syllables and don´t end with the letter "-y", we cannot add "-er" but instead use the adverb "more" before the adjective.


For example:

Expensive = More expensive
Comfortable = More comfortable
Interesting = More interesting

Example sentences:

My car is more comfortable than your car.

Your car is less comfortable than my car.

Football is more dangerous than tennis.

Tennis is less dangerous than football.



Adjectives which have irregular camparatives

The 3 adjectives which have irregular comparatives in English

are: "good", "bad", and "far".

Examples:

Good - Better than
Bad - Worse than
Far - Farther than / Further than

Examples:

My English is better than my French.

The weather in Englan is worse than in Spain.

Your house is farther from Frankfurt than mine.

I Believe

It is very common to use "believe" to express your point of view or way of thinking.

Example:

"I believe it is important to review the document carefully."



I am of the opinion of

A more formal way to express a personal point of view.

Example:

"I am of the opinion that the strategy should be changed."



I Consider

A way to express an opinion which has gone through a period of reflection.

Example:

"I consider it important to plan the work beforehand."



I am convinced

Convinced is used to show emphasis that there is no doubt in relation to the point of view.

Exemple:

"I am convinced this will solve the school´s problems."



I Fell

A subjective way to express opinion where feelings and sensations are important.

Example:

"I feel like she might not be telling the truth."



I Reckon

This verb is mostly used in informal contexts. It means the same as believe.

Example:

"I reckon that the project is going to be impossible."

When we negotiate in English, especially with people from another country, it´s important to be aware of their culture.

Questions you could ask at the start of negotiations:

- What are we hoping to achieve today?

- Could you be more specific?

- How much are you willing to compromise?



Phrases to make a proposal:

- From where we stand, and acceptable price would be...

- Our absolute bottom line is...

- We´d like to make a proposal...



Phrases to reject a proposal:

- I´m afraid... It is totally out of the question.

- I understand your point, but...

- I am afraid that we have some reservations on that point...



Phrases to Offer a compromise:

- We are ready to accept your offer, on one condition...

- If you would agree to... We could reciprocate with/by

- On the condition that you... We could be persuaded to consider...




Phrases to accept an offer:

- I think that´s fair enough.

- I couldn´t agree more.

- I´m happy with this deal.




Phrases to conclude a negotiation:

- Let´s look at the points we have agreed on...

- Shall we sum up the main points?

Bill Gates, an American business magnate, investor, author, philanthropist, and humanitarian in best knonw for founding Microsoft in 1975 with Paul Allen.

Microsoft went on to be the world´s biggest PC software company.

This business venture caused Bill Gates to be named as the richest man in the world on several occasions, but most recently being beaten by Jeff Bezos.

In the year 2000 along with his wife, Bill created the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The foundation is said to be the largest private foundation in the United States dollars in assets.

The primary aims of the foundation are to globally enhance healthcare and reduce extreme poverty. To date Bill Gates has donated more than 28 billion United States dollars of his own money to the foundation.

In 2009, Bill Gates teamed up with Warren Buffet to create the giving pledge. The pledge´s aim was to encourage extremely wealthy people give away at least half of their wealth to charitable causes.

By 2016, 139 individuals combined had signed the pledge to give away more than 365 billion United States dollars to charitable causes.

There is no physical result of something new being created.

Use DO for actions, obligations, and repetitive tasks.

Use MAKE for creating or producing something, and for actions you choose to do.

DO generally refers to the action itself, and MAKE usually refers to the result. For example, if you “make breakfast,” the result is an omelet!

Pronomes em Inglês - Pronouns

Os pronomes mais conhecidos são os pronomes pessoais, que em inglês chamamos de Personal Pronouns. Eles são I (eu), you (você), he (ele), she (ela), it (ele/ela/isto), we (nós) e they (eles). Eles são usados no lugar dos nomes (substantivos) e como sujeito de uma sentença.
